          OBJECT OF ROTARY

The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the idea of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business and community life;

4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

           THE FOUR-WAY TEST

       Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build on goodwill and

better friendships?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

SOME CLUB PROJECTS

Although the Club is relatively small it has a reputation for being active and getting involved, often in a hands on way.  These are some of our annual activities:

Organising a Carol Service and Christmas buffet party for up to 60 elderly people, mainly from local residential homes.

Helping to collect, buy, assemble and distribute some 500 food parcels delivered over Christmas, usually to elderly people, often living alone.

A very popular activity is Santa's Float. At the beginning of December, a week is devoted to raising money for charity. Each evening, Santa appears on his float in Melton Mowbray streets and during the day outside Tesco. Numerous elves accompany him on his quest.

Taking children from Sherard School to a "Kids Out" day at Wicksteed Park. These children have severe learning difficulties but enjoy the many activities on offer)

Sponsoring and accompanying a young local disabled person for a week at the residential outward bound centre known as The Calvert Trust, based ear Keswick, in the Lake District. (Some of those sponsored over the years have included youngsters in wheel chairs, in one case a boy with cerebral palsy). Activities range from water sports, abseiling to horse riding. One of our members is the District organiser involving some 80 clubs.

Involvement with and sponsoring a wide range of opportunities for young people that include the Youth Speaks, Young Designer, Young Chef and Young Musician competitions.

Sponsoring a young person to take a RYLA (Rotary Youth Leaders Award). This is a very intensive one week course involving initiative and team work . After which the person involved comes back and speaks to the club.

On the International front, our club has purchased and is organising the filling of several Aqua boxes for use during international emergencies. They are also involving schools in a Shoe-box scheme for the benefit of mid and eastern European children.  We also have a bi-annual exchange arrangement with a German Club in Coesfeld, near Munster.

Since providing new toys for the paediatric waiting rooms at the new Melton Hospital (as the club's recognition of the centenary of Rotary International) members, on a weekly basis, visit the hospital to clean these toys.

In addition to the regular items included above, the club occasionally has been able to provide emergency help when it has been most needed and with the minimum of fuss, e.g. the old lady presented with an emergency vet bill for her cat; also the one who was victim of theft and had her money stolen. Both cases we encountered as a result of delivering Christmas meals last year.
